The problem

The boiler door at Yugadanavi Power Plant had corroded badly enough that its sealing faces and bolt circle could no longer be trusted to hand measurement. It is also heavy, bolted into a working plant, and impossible to remove and send anywhere — any fix had to start from the door as it stood, on site.

The approach

The door was scanned in place, on the plant floor, with the geometry captured to industrial accuracy. The scan was then compared against a reference model in a deviation analysis, so the corroded, distorted areas were identified precisely rather than judged by eye, before the door was rebuilt as a clean, manufacture-ready CAD model.

The outcome

A manufacture-ready design recovered from a corroded original, plus a demonstration that this work is not limited to bench-sized parts — large industrial components can be digitised and rebuilt where they stand.
